Healthy Ageing / CapabilitySpan

CapabilitySpan: thinking beyond lifespan

Living longer matters less than staying strong, fit, mobile and capable. CapabilitySpan is the span of years you spend at or close to your personal best.

Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how long you live without significant disease. CapabilitySpan is narrower and more useful: the years in which you remain strong, fit, energetic, mobile and capable of doing what you actually want to do.

Framed that way, the priorities change. The goal stops being avoiding illness and becomes protecting capability — strength, cardiovascular fitness, movement quality and the energy to use them.

What extends CapabilitySpan

  • Resistance training maintained across decades rather than in bursts.
  • Regular cardiovascular work, including some genuinely hard efforts.
  • Enough protein and enough overall quality in ordinary meals.
  • Recovery and sleep treated as part of the plan.

Think in decades. The decisions that decide your sixties and seventies are being made now.

  • Identity
  • Willingness
